For ten days, I did nothing. And it was the hardest thing I have ever done. Not the swim. The waiting. I had come to Tarifa to cross the Strait of Gibraltar — the narrow channel where the Atlantic Ocean pours into the Mediterranean, where Europe and Africa stand only about 14 kilometres apart, close enough to see one continent from the other. Day 7 in Tarifa. I am ready to swim from Europe to Africa across the Strait of Gibraltar. But the biggest challenge is not the 16°C water. It is the waiting. And the waiting is teaching me something I did not expect.
